Chapter 13

Jess was so warm. It was almost stifling but when she tried to move, it was as if she was trapped. Her eyes flew open when she heard what sounded like a whimper.

Jess blew out a breath of relief when she looked into the dark brown eyes of Rufus. He seemed concerned that Jess was squirming. When she turned her head she realized why she was so warm.

Wade had her practically under him with his arm wrapped around her chest, and his leg lay across hers. His hot breath blew against the side of her head, as he snored softly.

“I think he’s trying to smother me, Rufus,” Jess whispered as she ruffled the dog’s ear.

Rufus sat up and wagged his tail frantically as he started to lick Wade’s face. At first, Wade pushed the dog away and grumbled something under his breath. When Rufus refused to stop, Wade groaned and rolled over away from the dog.

“Rufus, get the hell off the bed.” Wade draped his arm over his face as his dog refused to be ignored.

“I think he was trying to save me from smothering.” Jess rolled onto her side and propped her chin up on her fist.

“He tends to try to lay on top of you.” Wade playfully pushed the dog down.

“He wasn’t the one with his arm and leg draped over me.” Jess kissed his cheek.

“Oh, sorry. I was afraid you’d run out in the middle of the night.” Wade smiled.

“That would never happen, but we’ll have to talk about that snoring.” Jess poked him in the chest, and he rolled over her, pinning her to the bed.

“I don’t snore.” He nipped the side of her neck.

Before she could respond, Rufus jumped on Wade and growled. Wade pushed the dog back but continued to tease, lick, and nip up and down Jess’ neck.

Rufus wouldn’t be ignored. Wade lifted his head to glare at his dog. When Jess turned to look at the sweet retriever, she started to laugh. Rufus sat on the bed with his head tilted, and tongue out.

“You’re screwing with my mojo here, Rufus.” Wade narrowed his eyes at the dog.

“You do realize you’re glaring at a dog, right?” Jess snorted.

“Rufus, Pop got bacon.” Wade pointed to the slightly opened bedroom door.

The dog obviously understood the word bacon because he jumped off the bed and ran out of the room. Wade practically tripped over his own feet as he hurried after the dog to close and lock the door.

“That was so cruel. It’s only six in the morning.” Jess felt bad for the poor little pooch who was happily bounding down the stairs in the hopes of having a feed of bacon.

“Trust me. That dog won’t be disappointed. Dad gets up at five.” Wade grinned as he crawled back under the covers and pulled her into his arms.

“What time do you have to be to work?” Jess sighed against his body.

“We open at eight but I’m pretty close to the owner. He said it was okay to go in late today.
